Baton Rouge Community College is on pace to open a satellite campus on Hooper Road in Central this fall. Locating in the brand new but never occupied 50,000-plus square foot building at 10700 Hooper Road, BRCC has big plans for course offerings to serve Central and surrounding areas. The anchor programs for the facility, pending final FAA approval, will be in Avionics and A&P Maintenance. These vocational education programs train students to work on the instrumentation and power plants of airplanes as well as the airframes themselves.

The facility will also be home to dual enrollment courses serving Central High School and other area schools as well as college level general education classes selected to meet the needs of the community and local industry. BRCC officials on hand Wednesday are optimistic that all of these programs will begin this August.
BRCC Chancellor Andrea Miller, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Monique Cross, and Executive Director of Strategy Clo Fontenot toured the site Wednesday with Senator Bodi White and Mayor Mac Watts. Chancellor Miller explained that BRCC will position itself to meet the needs expressed by the community. Academic course offerings can be tailored to meet the educational needs of potential students in this northern area of the Parish.

With the support of the BRCC main campus in nearby Baton Rouge, the range of possible offerings is diverse. Possibilities include night and weekend schedules to help working people obtain a degree, regular offerings of Business, History, Psychology and Computer classes, and even Continuing Education opportunities.

The BRCC officials credit Central’s Senator Bodi White as the driving force behind bringing BRCC to Central. The carrot that drew the programs was definitely the one-of-a-kind facility, a fully climate controlled warehouse with overhead cranes and enough office space to use as classrooms, all on a major roadway just minutes from the airport and the interstate. BRCC’s Fontenot said “There is not another facility like this in the State.”
